2023 The Goose, Red Blend, Spring Mt (Jeroboam 3L)
The 2023 futures offering is finally here, and with it comes your first opportunity to secure your share of this highly anticipated vintage. With this new offering comes a new label, and this year, we photographed a Canadian Goose on a brief layover atop the Mailbox Vineyard before continuing its journey northward.
While the past vintages of our futures program have been driven by a focus on Cabernet, finding this bird overlooking our most important single vineyard of Merlot proved to be the inspiration for the direction of this year's blend. The Goose is all about finesse and length based mainly on Merlot, with a small component of Cabernet Sauvignon and an even smaller accompaniment of Cabernet Franc. The mouthfeel is extraordinary, with a sense of supreme richness and body while remaining lifted and fresh.
The Goose provides a striking example of how Merlot can effortlessly lead the way in any blend. It shows right away why the sense of supreme balance has become a routine characteristic of the 2023 wines. The indelible sense of freshness buoys the deep and dark fruit components, the subtle savory elements, and the underlying structure, yet the natural acidity of this vintage is the key. Still, I credit the small addition of estate Cabernet Franc with providing a significant sense of lift in the glas.
